Isla was crawling around the cockpit the other day in her new harness. She has a life jacket too of course, but for times when we're in the cockpit, we'll just tether her to the steering pedestal with this thing. That way, she will be free to explore and stretch her growing legs unencumbered by a bulky, hot life jacket, but will only be able to go so far. Did I mention she's a crawling machine and is pulling herself to standing and inching along tables already?! She's not even seven months yet! This girl is one determined little cookie. She's chatty too; full of "nanana's" and "dadada's". She laughs, giggles, interacts and is even developing bonafide opinions. So far her favorite food is sweet potatoes and she despises (and I mean despises) prunes and peas. Trying to feed her a food she does not like is no fun and results in a mess of epic proportions. This child is barely seven months old and headstrong. If you are into astrology, she's an Aries Water Dragon which basically means she is lucky and powerful. Aye, aye, aye...Aside from the unpleasantness of expanding her palette, she is a total joy. Just awesome to be around. I should know, I am around her a lot!
In other news: Scott unpacked most of our boxes on the boat. Out of thirty-four, we have only twelve to go. Asante is starting to feel like home and the more we explore and discover new things - the more we love her. We will probably be out of this apartment and onto the boat full-time in the next week or two. Should be interesting! Luckily a boat is pretty baby proof as it is; all the cabinets lock (and are tricky even for some adults) and there are no freestanding items she can accidentally pull over herself (like a television or something). That said, I'm sure we'll learn about all the ways the boat is NOT baby proof soon enough!

For the last couple of days I was going to ask you about how you'll be managing to keep Isla safe, while the two of you might be busy with boat handling!! You've answered one of my questions (tethered to the steering pedestal), but wondered about where she will be sleeping, particularly as she gets a little bit older? I love your new settee make over, and thought that you could almost have had a hinged railing that locked up on both sides making a crib area for Isla when you might need that, and because of the hinges, could be dropped down and out of the way when not in use for her. But, maybe you actually need it more for the two of you, and on board company, than as a temporary crib, or playpen configuration! It does look fantastic, I'm sure you're pleased with how well it came out . . . a beautiful job!! I'd feel better if Isla has two tethers on her (like the astronauts), so that she's never without a back-up one when she's on her own!! Like you, I had remarked in one of my previous comments about how amazing it is that she's been standing up on her two feet, even before she was 7 months old. Probably getting her "sea-legs" while on the boat will give her a real advantage when on dry land (during this learning stage). If you don't mind my asking -- where did you get the tether for Isla? I am assuming yall did a lot of research on that one. As we will need to tether Finn and Mackie, any recommendations you have could greatly benefit us. We have a great harness used to rock climb with the kids but are also researching other options out there. Thanks! Lisa
@Carol - safety is key, but two harnesses would be overkill, this one is seriously strong and pretty impossible for her to get out of once she's clipped in! But thanks for your concern. Yes - she is WAY ahead of the curve right now...we shall see when she takes her first step. I am in NO RUSH for that!

@Lisa - Scott picked it up at the West Marine here...it's just the West Marine brand infant tether...so far we really like it, she doesn't mind wearing it either. Of course we have yet to sail with her wearing it though ;) Good luck - feel free to email me with any more questions!
